6 WAYS TO SAVE WATER IN YOUR GARDEN

If you want to conserve water and struggle to keep your garden alive.

You will need to re-think your usage and how you water your plants. Here are my six saving tips to help you conserve, and manage your water :

CHOOSE THE RIGHT TIME

Studies show that the time you water your garden, has significant effects on how plants stay healthy.
It is ideal for potted plants to grow, around noon and in the afternoon, while the garden is in the morning is ideal times

COLLECT YOUR RAINWATER WITH INTO A TANK

Why not collect rainwater into a tank, That way you can drench your garden with clean, unpolluted water. Before you commit to a tank, there are questions you need to ask yourself:

Location of your Tank?

  • Is under the Timber Deck allowed?
  • Roof space?
  • Big Tank or Small Tank?
  • How many Tanks?
  • Garden Size?
  • No. of people in the house?
  • Is it safe or clean to drink it?
  • Maintenance level?
  • Can you hide the tank?
  • What are the underground options?
  • How much to expect in rainfall?
  • Bushfires – are you in a prone area?
  • Do I need approval from the City Council?
  • Could I decorate it?
  • Are you a City Dweller?

CHOOSE YOUR POTS WISELY

When choosing pots, make sure you choose the right plant container. Avoid porous planters, Please also note that you must select the right location for your plants. Dark pots would do well in a shady spot; while the light-coloured ones in sunny areas.

Dark and metal pots on raised platforms will draw out water. In contrast, unglazed terracotta clay pots will tend to lose moister. It will dry out faster than a glazed pot. Hanging baskets with coconut and coir fibre liners do let water and nutrients out more .

If you like choose to use metal or terracotta container, then consider using them as a cachepot. And put a smaller, less porous pot inside to keep vital moisture.

USE MULCH IN GARDEN

Mulch soil is a powerhouse in the garden. When used , it will save you time, ward off slugs, weed eradication, and maintaining the grounds. It also helps prevent water evaporation for the top of the soil.

USE CRYSTALS

Use water-retaining crystals which will help keep moisture in pots and containers. Crystals are ideal for indoor and outdoor plants. All you need to do is mix it with soil . What crystals do is that it swells to absorb the moisture and later released.

PICK LOW-MAINTENANCE PLANTS

Pick plants that are low maintenance that will save you time and money. Pick slow-growing plants. They are usually smaller plants, small or narrow leaves, and leaves that need less moisture.
