Compost is this good or not? It is a breakdown of biological waste, it also serves as a food for plants, also retains water, and inhibits the growth of the root.
Compost makes the soil more organic and helps in boosting the plants. It can boost your plants with nutrient-rich soil and will help their growth. You can get from various types of organic waste. Vegetables and fruit are a great idea
Why compost?
The compost is closing the natural cycle of the circular motion of matter in nature. Biodegradable waste becomes organic matter. Thus we are more responsible and can be active in solving the problem with waste, i.e. we recycle about 1/3 of waste.
This is how we contribute to:
· Reduction of the volume of waste and landfill relief;
· Reduction the cost for collection, transportation, and waste deposition;
· Reduction of soil, water, and air pollution;
· Increasing the quality of the soil;
· Increasing the quality of the environment.
What you can compost
· Biological waste from household waste. This includes waste from vegetables, fruit, eggshells, coffee grounds, tea bags, leftover bread;
· Garden and green waste (leaves, withered flowers, mown grass, etc.);
· Remaining bio-waste (tree bark, sawdust, paper towels, small quantities of paper, etc.);
· Black and white newspaper (help to add carbon to your compost);
· Wood shavings or sawdust.
What you cannot compost
· Liquid waste from cooked food (may not be good for plants);
· Meat, fish, bones, skin (odour problems);
· Dairy products, oils, and fats (odour problems);
· Ash, packaging, rubber (contain substances that can be harmful to plants);
· Painted and varnished wood waste (can be harmful to plants);
· Clothes, cigarettes, etc. (can be harmful to plants);
· Pet waste like faeces from dogs or cats (can contain parasites);
· Diseased plants (will develop a virus to the plant).
How can you compost
The most suitable place for composting is a dry part of the garden. It can’t be too dry because it will slow the composting process. It should be away from direct wind.
The main process involves four main components: organic materials, oxygen, moisture, and bacteria. Oxygen helps to breakdown the organic materials by bacteria. Moisture is important to support the process. The bacteria will break down the materials into good compost for use in the garden.
First thing is to determine the place.
Then the first layer will be 10 cm of plant material. That could include chopped twigs.
In the second layer about 10-15 cm, you should add dry leaves.
Then as a third layer, you should add vegetable waste. On the top, you should add 5-7 cm soil.
This is all to ensure the presence of microorganisms. You can repeat all these steps to fill it in. All that you should cover with jute bags or straw that is leaking air. Like this, they are reducing the dryness and the loss of heat.
The plant material should start to decompose for 3-6-12 months. It depends on the organic waste, and decomposition conditions
How mature compost looks
The compost should be with dark brown colour and a pleasant smell of forest soil. It should have a very good structure. You can’t recognize the bio-waste, except some hard degradable parts like seed husks, and so.
Using compost
There are various ways you can use the compost. You can distribute the through your garden or in furrows. You can use it for your soil to be organic and to have more bio plants. You can sparkle on the top of your soil, or you can mix it with your fruit and vegetable beds.
Or if your flowers are already planted, you can spread a thin layer in the soil.
It will work on its way down to the root. So you will boost your plant with healthy soil to have more steady and beautiful flowers.
Using mulch is an excellent idea. Adding mulch to your plant will help to keep the moisture inside the soil. It is a fantastic way to boost your garden’s harvest. Adding mulch will also prevent weeds from sprouting. You should add and spread a 7-10cm layer.
Conclusion
Adding compost to your garden can improve your soil and making it much healthier. It will keep the moisture. Your plants will get the supply of nutrients as needed.
The immature can damage the plants because it continues to decompose in the soil, once it’s in it. Using synthetic fertilizers can cause negative effects on the soil.
Composting is a great material for garden soil.
